Wonderful food, a warm welcome and a beautiful location.

DFF Lift Off

[This is one in a series of blog posts written by Charlotte the Intern.  Tune in daily to find out about what she’s been up to, what she has been learning about, and all of the crazy things she does as part of the Manna from Devon team.]

It’s finally here.  Tomorrow, the food festival will begin and I’ll finally get to see this thing that I’ve been talking about for the past two months in action!  Over at Manna, things have completely taken off today, with the arrival of several volunteers (who will be sleeping on every flat surface available in the house), and what seems to be the entire contents of the kitchen having been shipped over to Dartmouth to stock the various chef demo areas.  My desk looks like a bomb went off next to it.  See below for evidence:

In the middle of the hustle, I remembered something horrible:  I was supposed to make bread for tomorrow night’s dinner!  My first reaction?  I DON’T HAVE TIME TO MAKE ANY BLOODY BREAD!!

But then I took and deep breath and looked at my ever-growing to do list and thought, “Right.  Maybe I’ll just ignore all of this for awhile and go down to the kitchen.”  I’m so glad I did.  It felt amazing to do something with my hands, to get away from the computer screen and all of the words flooding my inbox to these most basic acts: measuring out the ingredients, mixing them all together, folding and cutting and shaping, it was all like therapy.  It was a good reminder that when everything seems to be swirling around way over your head, sometimes the best thing to do is to take a time out to do something completely tactile.  And for me, the most relaxing things usually happen in the kitchen.

The bread was lovely, my first real solo sourdough venture, and though it definitely isn’t perfect, it tastes great.  And that’s exactly what counts.

And with that, I’m off to bed before an early first morning of the food festival.  See you all down there!!
